How to Brush Properly: Are You Doing It Right?

Brushing your teeth is something we all do every day, but are you sure you're doing it correctly? Proper brushing is essential to maintaining healthy teeth and gums, preventing cavities, and avoiding gum disease. Here’s a quick guide to ensure you’re brushing like a pro.

First, make sure you’re using the right toothbrush. A soft-bristled brush is gentle on your gums while effectively removing plaque. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

Next, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens enamel and helps protect against decay. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use gentle, circular motions. Avoid aggressive back-and-forth scrubbing, which can wear down your enamel and irritate your gums.

Aim to brush for two minutes, covering all surfaces of your teeth—front, back, and chewing surfaces. Don’t forget to clean your tongue, as it can harbor bacteria that cause bad breath. If you struggle to brush for the full two minutes, consider using an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer to make it easier.

Brushing twice a day is crucial, but it’s not enough on its own. Pair it with daily flossing and regular dental checkups to keep your smile in top shape.

Taking these steps ensures your oral hygiene routine is as effective as possible, leading to better overall dental health.
